Grants to Head Start programs are awarded to local public or
private or for-profit agencies. Faith-based agencies are
eligible for grants. Federal funds cover 80 percent of a
program's total costs. The remaining 20 percent must be provided
through volunteered community services, monetary donations or
good contributed. Total federal funding for Region VI Head
Start/Early Head Start grantees in Oklahoma for Program Year
2009-2010 was $83,800,755. Total funding for American
Indian/Alaskan Native program branch grantees was $24,335,181.
Oklahoma is one of the few states to provide additional state
funds to federally funded Head Start programs. These funds are
administered by the Oklahoma Department of Commerce. Total state
appropriated funding was $2,452,533.
